PTCC Update

28 March 2013

We’re on our way!

The Property Tax Independence Act was formally introduced on Tuesday, March 12 as House Bill 76 in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and as Senate Bill 76 in the Pennsylvania Senate.

A press conference in the Capitol Media Center accompanied the introduction. In attendance were many lawmakers from both chambers and from both parties, a terrific show of bicameral and bipartisan support for this vital legislation. The photos at the left are from that event. A very informative video replay of the press event is available here; please take a few moments to have a look.

The House version of the legislation (HB 76) currently has 63 co-sponsors, 80% Republican and 20% Democrat. The Senate version (SB 76) has 18 co-sponsors, 59% Republican and 41% Democrat. These are great numbers for each chamber and an outstanding showing of bipartisan support for the Property Tax Independence Act! The full list of current co-sponsors is posted here. If your Representative or Senator is not on these lists, please contact him or her and respectfully request that they co-sponsor HB 76/SB 76, the Property Tax Independence Act and, if you wish, give them your reasons for supporting the legislation. If they are on the list, be sure to contact their office and thank them for co-sponsoring the legislation. This lets them know that they have done the right thing for their constituents and helps to give them the courage to fight for enactment.

Both bills have been assigned to the Finance Committees in their respective chambers. We’ll need to wait for a short time to see if the Finance Committee Chairs make any effort to move the legislation forward. If they do not, we’ll have additional information on how you can help to advance the Property Tax Independence Act.

In the meantime, if you’re a Facebook subscriber please join the PTCC Facebook page. There’s always a lively discussion among the 1300+ members, the latest information, and tips that you can use to assist the effort.

Finally, the email initiative from the Daniel Boone Taxpayer Activists, "Free Us From Unsustainable School Property Taxation!" that was highlighted in the last PTCC Update was a great success. The effort generated more than 1,300 emails to the Governor and House and Senate leadership in support of the Property Tax Independence Act and more are still being sent. Here’s a big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in this initiative. With that many emails landing in their inboxes they certainly must have gotten the message.

Thank you, everyone, for your continuing support. Together we will free Pennsylvania homeowners from the burden of the school property tax.

No tax should have the power to leave you homeless!
